Shitsu’s make for amazing companions. Unfortunately smaller dogs have a bit of a bad reputation in some circles. Some people see little dogs as yappy ankle biting fluff balls! This is so annoying! Shitsu’s are excellent, regal, proud dogs that actually make for excellent security dogs. I have been a Shih Tzu fan for many years, my first dog was actually a Maltese Shih Tzu cross and he had a wonderful temperament and started my love for both breeds of dog. Let me share a few facts and interesting points about the shitsu breed:
The history of the Shitsu – Recent DNA testing on today’s breed of Shih Tzu actually linked it to an ancient breed of dog making it a close genetic relative to wolves. There are various Theories about where today’s breed stems from, the general consensus is that the breed originated from a cross between the Lhasa Apso and Pekingese. The name Shih Tzu actually is translated from Chinese as “Lion Dog” because the breed resembles lions as depicted in traditional oriental art.
Shitsu dog temperament – Shitsu’s are really friendly and outgoing dogs in general. They make excellent companions for the elderly and middle aged companions. Despite their small size they can be known to bare their teeth and fight if they are put in a situation where they feel danger or trapped, for this reason it is best to always supervise your shitsu dog when he or she is around children. Shitsu’s make excellent pets for people that don’t exercise much, although shitsu’s are active and love to play they only have small legs so they don’t require as much exercise as bigger breeds of dog.
Shitsu dog grooming and size – Shitsu’s have the cutest faces ever but they need to be trimmed from time to time. Shih Tzu’s are actually prone to some eye and ear problems so you should always try and keep these areas of their body trimmed. Their long soft coat is beautiful to look at and style but it can be a little bit of a burden when it comes to haircuts and bath times. Luckily for us Shitsu’s are only small dogs! The average Shitsu dog only stands around 7 to 12 inches tall and only weigh around 4 to 7.5kg making them short and stubby little dogs.
